PREMI0 IN MEMÓRIAN A LA LIBERTAD

DE EXPRESIÓN A HRANT DINK

Rakel Dink, viuda del periodista turco de origen armenio Hrant Dink, fue ovacionada por los centenares de asistentes al acto del Club Internacional de Prensa celebrado en Madrid, presidido por María Teresa Fernández de la Vega, Vicepresidenta Primera y Portavoz del Gobierno de José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero. Hrant Dink fue asesinado en Estambul, el pasado mes de enero de 2007, por defender la libertad de expresión y el reconocimiento del genocidio armenio de 1915 por parte del Estado turco. Fernández de la Vega entregó el Premio In Memórian a la viuda de Hrant Dink, Rakel Dink, que se desplazó expresamente desde Turquía a Madrid, donde recogió la distinción serena y vívamente emociada y ponunció un alegato a favor de la libertad de expresión y la justicia, mezclado con cálidos recuerdos familiares. DISCURSO DE RAKEL DINK

Queridos miembros del Club Internacional de Prensa, queridos invitados e invitadas,

Pensar, hablar y escribir en libertad

Mi esposo ha sido un defensor de la libertad y de todos los derechos humanos básicos, sobre todo el de la libre expresión. También trató de alcanzar el corazón del pueblo, en su propio estilo, insistiendo que los hechos históricos deben ser expuestos y los dolores deben ser compartidos. Lo hizo con gran coraje, entusiasmo y pasión. Él pensó, habló y escribió con libertad. A pesar de que sabía que su vida estaba en peligro, trabajó empedernidamente y confiando en el país en que vivía, en sus lectores y en la humanidad entera. El se manifestó con la pluma, no con las armas, y aunque las armas acabaron con él, no acabaron con sus ideales.

Justicia

Esos ideales le permitieron demandar justicia no sólo para él, sino para todos. No quiso dejar a sus amigos solos en la lucha, esos que pensaban como él, que aspiraban a derechos democráticos como él.

Pedir perdón

Hoy, todos estamos profundamente doloridos por su partida, y agradecemos que el mundo entero haya compartido nuestro dolor y llorado con nosotros.

En realidad, deberíamos llorar por aquellos que bárbaramente matan a gente inocente, porque son dignos de lástima. Yo siento pena por aquellos que asesinaron a mi marido, porque son los enemigos de la humanidad, la paz, el amor, la comprensión y la lealtad y no comprenden el sentido de sacrificio. No tienen idea de lo que significa el coraje de defender los ideales. Repito que siento lástima por ellos, porque se encuentran en una situación miserable. Si, como sugieren las Sagradas Escrituras, hubieran pedido perdón, se hubieran salvado, hubieran sido absueltos del crimen y de todos los sentimientos negativos que arrastra ese crimen: el orgullo, la vanidad, el prejuicio y los deseos de arrasar la propiedad, la vida y el honor ajenos.

Honor para la Justicia de Turquía

Si Turquía desea tener un futuro claro y brillante, hoy es su oportunidad. Este caso debe ser seriamente investigado y los verdaderos criminales deben salir a la luz. Tal vez entonces Turquía no tropiece con la roca moral que tiene delante, dé un salto sobre ella y se libere para siempre de la nube negra que lo rodea. De modo que sería por su propio bien. Nosotros ya perdimos a Hrant Dink. Ya poco nos importa que se castigue a miles o a ninguno… Este es un asunto de honor para la Justicia de Turquía.

No tuvieron hombro sobre el qué llorar

Aquí quiero contarles algo personal. Luego del trágico hecho, estábamos sentados en casa, con mi hija, y en un momento élla me dijo: “Mamá, nosotros sobrevivimos 1915, y, ahora, otra vez… ¿Qué hicimos para merecer esto?” Me sobrepuse y le contesté: “No, hija, esto no es igual a esa masacre. La situación de éllos era mucho más difícil. En ese entonces, familias que eran numerosas desaparecieron. Sólo sobrevivieron uno o dos de éllos, y ni siquiera tenían un hombro donde llorar. Se quedaron sin hogar, hambrientos, en la calle. En cambio, nosotros… ¿Ves? Estamos sentados bajo un techo. Estamos en mejores condiciones, rodeados por la familia entera”. Entonces nos abrazamos y agradecimos a Dios de lo que teníamos.

Defender los ideales de libertad de Hrant Dink

Mi familia y yo tomamos fuerza a través de ustedes. De modo que pensamos seguir defendiendo los ideales de libertad y de libre expresión de Hrant Dink. Esa es nuestra misión sagrada.

Honrar su memoria

Obtener un premio es agradable, y ser valorado es un consuelo. De modo que agradezco de corazón la distinción con que el Club Internacional de Prensa honra la memoria de Hrant Dink y se identifica con sus ideales. Este acto quedará grabado en los anales de la comprensión y la justicia, para siempre.

WORDS BY RAKEL DINK AT THE AWARDS CEREMONY OF THE INTERNATIONAL PRESS CLUB IN MADRID, SPAIN.

MRS. DINK ACCEPTED THE POSTHUMOUS AWARD GRANTED TO HRANT DINK “FOR DEFENDING FREEDOM OF SPEECH IN AGOS PERIODICAL, WHICH COST HIM HIS LIFE.”

THE CEREMONY TOOK PLACE AT THE HOTEL INTERCONTINENTAL IN MADRID, SPAIN, ON NOVEMBER 14, 2007, AT 8;30 PM.

It was an event of great caliber under the presidency of well known journalist José Antonio Gurriarán. The luxurious hall of the hotel was at capacity with the attendance of a select group 750 people, many of whom had to stand.

Among those present were ministers of the government, members of the Spanish parliament, noted international personalities, journalists and Spanish celebrities.

The presence of the Vice-president of Spain, María Teresa Fernández de la Vega, gave the event an accent of hierarchy.

Several journalists of print, radio and TV received awards, accompanied by the warm applause of the public.

Though the award granted to Hrant Dink, accepted by his widow, had special effect. The audience was touched, and their applause seemed endless, as a statement of support. It was really exceptional.

Rakel Dink was given a statuette of the International Press Club by Vice-president of Spain, María Teresa Fernández de la Vega, in who's speach, among other declarations, she enhanced the heroic life of Armenian journalist Hrant Dink and his struggle to maintain freedom of speech in Turkey, in the pages of Agos, the newspaper he owned and directed.

Additionally, Mrs. Dink received a certificate from the institution - delivered by Dr. Alicia Ghiragossián - who also translated Mrs. Dink's Armenian acceptance speech into Spanish.

Many of the attendees were moved to tears while listening the words pronounced by Rakel Dink:

“Dear members of the International Press Club, dear guests:

My husband has been an advocate of freedom and all basic human rights, particularly free speech. He also tried to reach the heart of the people, in his own way, insisting that historical facts must be exposed and pain must be shared. He did it with great courage, enthusiasm and passion. He thought, spoke and wrote freely. In spite of knowing his life was in danger, he worked stubbornly, trusting the country he lived in, his readers and all of humankind, at large. He fought with his pen, not with weapons, and although the weapons put an end to his life they could not put an end to his ideals.

Those ideals allowed him to demand justice not only for him, but for all. He didn´t want to leave his friends alone in the struggle, those who thought like him, and aspired to democratic rights like him.

Today, we are all deeply hurt by his departure and we thank the world for sharing our pain and crying with us.

In fact, we should cry for those who barbarically kill innocents, because they are pitiful. I feel sorry for those who assassinated my husband, because they are the enemies of humanity, peace, love, understanding, loyalty, and do not comprehend the meaning of sacrifice. They don´t have any idea about the courage to defend ideals. I repeat, I feel sorry for them, because they are in a miserable situation. If, as the Holy Bible suggests, they would have asked for forgiveness, they would have been saved, they would have been absolved of the crime and all the negative feelings that any crime bears: pride, vanity, prejudice and the drive to destroy the property, life and honor of people.

If Turkey wants a clear and brilliant future, today is the opportunity. This case must be seriously investigated and the true criminals must come up to light. Perhaps then, Turkey would not stumble on the moral rock in its way, and instead overcome it and be liberated forever of the black cloud that surrounds it. So it would be for its own good. We already lost Hrant Dink. We couldn´t care less if thousands are punished or none… This is a matter of honor for the Justice of Turkey.

Here I want to tell you something personal. After the tragic happening, we were sitting at home, with my daughter, and at a certain moment she told me: “Mom, we survived 1915, and now again… What did we do to deserve this?” I gathered myself and answered: “No, my child, this is not like that massacre. Their situation was much more difficult. Then, numerous families disappeared. Only one or two from each of them survived and they didn´t even have a shoulder to cry on. They remained without a home, hungry, in the street…And we are sitting under a roof, see? We are in better conditions, surrounded by our entire family.” Then we hugged each other and thank God for what we had.

My family and I get strength through you. So, we intend to go on defending the ideals of freedom and free speech of Hrant Dink. That is our sacred mission.

To receive an award is pleasant, and to be validated is a consolation. So, I full-heartedly thank the distinction with which the International Press Club honors the memory of Hrant Dink and identifies with his ideals. This event will forever be engraved in the annals of understanding and justice.

There was an ovation. The audience was excited, on a spiritual high, as if celebrating truth.

At the end of the event, the group of Armenians invited surrounded Rakel Dink as an icon, asking questions and getting the simple yet deep responses from the widow, who is a woman of unbelievable humility and possesses an evolved soul.

After the ceremony, there was a gala reception with live orchestra and dancing.

One of the most relevant words of that evening was that of the Vice-president of Spain, María Teresa Fernandez de la Vega. Regarding Hrant Dink she remarked that he was a victim of the fanatics, for seeking truth and defending freedom of speech, making him a pillar in journalistic profession and the issues of the state of law. She added that Dink deserves, aside from our gratitude and recognition, our effort to insure, beyond the political or religious frontiers and options, that the two basic principles, truth and freedom of speech, find their way in the world.

Rakel Dink recibió el calor de los cientos de asistentes al acto de entrega del Premio In Memórian a su marido, Hrant Dink, el periodista turco de origen armenio asesinado en Estambul en enero de 2007 por defender la libertad de expresión y porque sea reconocido el exterminio de más de un millón y medio de armenios en 1915. Sus palabras fueron vívamente aplaudidas por los centenares de destacados representantes del mundo del periodismo español y extranjero, la política, el sindicalismo, la empresa y de las embajadas acreditadas en España, que se sintieron enternecidos por las palabras de dolor y a la vez de fuerza de la viuda de Dink. La vicepresidenta del Gobierno español, María Teresa Fernández de la Vega, la rodeó de afecto y cariño y la animó en el afán por que se haga justicia por el asesinato del periodista turco-armenio. Su viuda estuvo también rodeada y protegida durante este acto y su corta estancia en Madrid por numerosos armenios residentes en diferentes ciudades españolas, como Valencia, Barcelona y Madrid, y otros procedentes de otros países, descendientes de la diáspora armenia. La poetisa armenia, que fue candidata al Nobel y presidenta de los Periodistas de Habla Hispana de Estados Unidos, Alicia Ghiragossián, se desplazó desde California para acompañar en todo momento a Rakel Dink. También acudió Gueguel Massmanián, hija de armenio y española, que fue Fallera Mayor de Valencia en 2005 para estar también junto a Rakel. En las fotografías se recogen momentos que vivió Rakel Dink durante el acto celebrado en Madrid, al amparo de quienes confían que este reconocimiento internacional al periodista Hrant Dink sea estímulo e impulso para la verdad del pueblo armenio.
